NORTHERN LIGHTS NORRBOTTEN

Many perceive Norrbotten's landscape in the north of Sweden as Europe's periphery, a place that is pristine but also dark and dangerous. In the last decades, however, new light is shining on this region. Norrbotten is undergoing major changes, boosted by the rise of the "green" economy, in response to the pressing climate emergency. The urban design and landscape architecture studio "Northern Lights: Vision and Strategies for Piteå and Norrbotten" intertwines the ambitions of Europe's Green Deal with the principles of Degrowth.

Can we contribute to foster a just transition by shaping an inspiring vision, adaptive strategies, and holistic designs for this extreme ecosystem?

In March 2024, a group of 21 students and tutors travelled to this land of contrasts and transformation to experience first-hand the effects of global challenges on local landscapes and communities.
